A Day That Started with Paint… and Ended with Full Hearts
If you had driven past the Siyaphila Old Age Centre on Buscor Mandela Day, you probably would have heard the laughter before you saw the people.
Paint brushes moved across walls, volunteers greeted one another, music played in the background, and the joyful chatter of Bogogo (grandmothers) filled the air. It didn’t feel like an ordinary day. Instead, it felt like family had come home.
This was Buscor’s way of celebrating Buscor Mandela Day, not with speeches, but with action.
Together with the community, the Buscor team spent the day renovating and painting the Siyaphila Old Age Centre and the Msogwaba Community Hall, giving both places a fresh new look. However, as the day unfolded, it became clear that the biggest transformation was not the buildings. It was the smiles on people’s faces.
Every Brush Stroke Told a story.
There is something special about seeing people put aside their everyday jobs to serve others.
Buscor employees traded bus keys and office desks for paint brushes and rollers. Before long, white walls became colourful again, while old spaces slowly came back to life.
Meanwhile, laughter echoed around every corner. Walking through the centre, it was easy to spot paint on people’s hands, but nobody seemed to mind. Instead, everyone worked together, shared jokes, and encouraged one another.
The excitement was not only among the volunteers. The residents watched with proud smiles as the place they call home became brighter with every brush stroke.
Sometimes, making a difference starts with something as simple as opening a tin of paint.
Then Came the Moment Nobody Will Forget
While the paint was still drying, another special surprise was waiting.
The Buscor team gathered to hand out warm blankets to Bogogo, living at the Siyaphila Old Age Centre. As each blanket found a new owner, something beautiful happened.
Smiles stretched from ear to ear. Some of the grandmothers wrapped themselves in their blankets immediately, refusing to let go. Others held them close while quietly saying, “Ngiyabonga.” A few couldn’t stop smiling as they hugged Buscor employees who had only met them that morning.
It wasn’t just a blanket they received. It was warmth, care, and a reminder that someone had taken the time to think about them.
For a moment, nothing else mattered.
Then the music took over
Just when everyone thought the day couldn’t get any better, someone started singing.
Within seconds, another voice joined in. Then another. Before long, the Siyaphila Old Age Centre had turned into a celebration filled with music, dancing, and endless laughter.
Bogogo did not need much encouragement. They were already on their feet, clapping their hands and showing everyone a few dance moves. Buscor employees happily joined in, proving that community spirit is sometimes best expressed through song.
Whether you were young or old, an employee or a resident, everyone became part of the same celebration.
If happiness had a sound, it would have sounded exactly like that.
Familiar Faces Made the Day Even Brighter
Adding even more excitement to the Buscor Mandela Day celebration was the energetic team from Ligwalagwala FM.
Popular presenters Fortune Ntekati, TDK Thandeka Tonga, Vusi Mongwe, and their colleagues kept the atmosphere alive with laughter, conversations, and entertainment that had everyone smiling.
In addition, Lokuhle FM was there to witness the occasion, capturing the day’s special moments and sharing the story of a community united by kindness.
The celebration was further honoured by the presence of Ndlunkulu, Chief Mother Mrs Shongwe, whose support highlighted the importance of unity, compassion, and giving back to those who need it most.
Together, their presence reminded everyone that Mandela Day belongs to every South African.
No One Went Home Hungry
After a day of painting, singing, dancing, and sharing countless smiles, there was only one thing left to do.
Eat.
The smell of delicious food quickly gathered everyone around the tables. Conversations continued, laughter echoed across the hall, and strangers who had met only hours before were now sharing stories over a meal.
Bogogo enjoyed every bite, while Buscor employees, community members, traditional leaders, volunteers, and media partners sat side by side like one big family.
It was the perfect ending to a memorable day.
More Than Mandela Day
Mandela Day reminds us to give 67 minutes of our time to help others. However, Buscor gave much more than time.
The team gave energy to restore community spaces. They gave warmth through every blanket and joy through every dance. Most importantly, they gave people a reason to smile.
As the buses prepared to leave and goodbyes were exchanged, one thing became clear. The fresh paint will brighten the walls for years to come, while the blankets will keep Bogogo warm during the cold winter nights.
Even so, the memories created that day, the laughter, the singing, the dancing, the hugs, and the shared meal will stay in people’s hearts for much longer.
That is the magic of Buscor Mandela Day.
It isn’t measured by the number of walls painted or blankets donated. Instead, it is measured by the smiles you leave behind.
Judging by the smiles that filled Siyaphila Old Age Centre and the Msogwaba Community Hall, Buscor left behind more than enough to warm hearts long after the day had come to an end.
